When ASME B31.3 certified, a “good-looking” joint is not enough. Owners, engineers, and inspectors want proof that your bonders know what they are doing and that their
work can stand up to high pressures.
B31.3 bonder qualification training is a structured, hands-on program that teaches bonders how to make quality, standard-compliant joints and then proves it through hydrostatic pressure testing. Weld-On’s B31.3 bonder qualification program provides crews with ASTM D2855 training, instructions for hands-on B31.3 pressure sample creation, and an objective pass-or-fail result from our hydro lab.
What B31.3 Training Covers
ASME B31.3 is a testing standard created by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to qualify bonders as competent Cemento solvente welders. The standard provides requirements for the creation of pressure samples and requirements for the hydrostatic pressure testing of those pressure samples. Participants must create a pressure sample that can withstand the standard’s pressure testing requirements to be certified.
Our training focuses on the parts that matter most to bonders:
• Correct Tubazione and Raccordo preparation
• Proper use of Primer and Cemento solvente
• Set and cure times
• Solvent welding tips and best practices
• Common causes of failure
The goal is simple: every participant understands how to create great quality joints that can withstand the harsh test pressure requirements of the ASME B31.3 standard.
How the Weld-On Hands-On Certification Works
This is where the program is different from a typical “class” or toolbox talk.
1. Live instruction: A Weld-On trainer walks participants through B31.3 sample requirements and best practices, using the actual materials they work with in the field.
2. Each person makes a test sample: Every participant receives Tubazione and caps, then prepares and assembles a sample following ASTM D2855 procedures using Weld-On products.
3. Samples are sent to the IPS Hydro Lab: After the session, the completed samples are shipped to the IPS Hydro Laboratory in North Carolina. The lab performs pressure testing according to the ASME B31.3 bonder qualification protocols.
4. Objective pass or fail results: Each sample is recorded as a pass or fail. If failed, the participant can work with Weld-On on next steps for retraining and retesting.
5. Documented proof of qualification: Participants who pass receive an IPS Weld-On ASME B31.3 Bonder Qualification certification along with a formal letter documenting their successful test. This gives you something concrete to show owners, inspectors, and QA teams.
Why It Matters for Your Operation
Bringing this training to your crew delivers practical benefits:
• Book more jobs requiring B31.3 certified installers
• Fewer failed inspections and hydro tests
• Fewer leaks, less rework, and increased productivity
• A consistent, documented procedure across your team instead of “everyone has their own way”
• Evidence that your bonders are qualified to work on jobs governed by B31.3
For contractors, fab shops, and plant maintenance teams, that can be the difference between winning or losing critical work and between a smooth start-up or a costly investigation.
Bring B31.3 Training To Your Team
Rather than sending people offsite and hoping the message sticks, Weld-On’s Professional Training Hub brings B31.3 training and bonder qualification directly to your organization, with real samples, real testing, and real results.
